     In February 1979, the southern portion of Miami Beach, at the confluence of the Atlantic Ocean and Government cut, was officially designated as the Nation's first 20th Century Historic District. The famous "Art Deco District" of South Beach, known around the world as "SoBe", features a one-mile square area listed in the National Register of Historic Places, boasting the largest concentration of Art Deco structures in the United States.
