Historically dated to the early 1800's, Coconut Grove is one of Miami's original pioneer settlements. A village with over-hanging, broad-leafed trees, it is surrounded by peaceful bay front parks and marinas. Coconut Grove has a carefree ambience, where intellectuals, jet-setters, artists, craftsmen, and professionals converge to create an eclectic neighborhood with sidewalk and outdoor dining cafes. High-rise residences and office buildings overlook Coconut Grove's Sailboat Bay, dotted with hundreds of vessels. The Village is scattered with a myriad of shops, galleries, bookstores, restaurants, and night clubs with quaint red-brick sidewalks illuminated by Victorian street lamps. Coconut Grove was one of the first areas in South Florida to be settled, therefore this bay front community contains dozens of historic homes dating back to the 1890's, including the Barnacle. The rich history of the Grove is evident at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, an Italian Renaissance Palace; and the Coconut Grove Playhouse, which hosts Broadway productions. The Grove also provides residents with a Dade County Library, The Museum of Science, and the Space Transit Planetarium. Throughout the year, the village is filled with outdoor celebrations that provide the Grove its festive trademark. |
